Social Ministries

The ministries in this category act as an outreach to the infirm, the bereaved and the most innocent of all, the unborn.

Catholic Charities

The mission of St. Luke’s Catholic Charities Satellite Office is to provide aid to families and individuals in financial crisis with immediate short-term assistance; to serve as good stewards of the resources given by and through the Catholic community to help those in need; and to provide counseling and pray for those in need who depend on the St Luke’s Catholic Church for assistance. Assistance is provided to both parishioners and non-parishioners.  We provided limited assistance for electricity, water, rent or mortgage.  A financial emergency such as income decrease or unexpected expenses has occurred in the last few months.  Supporting documentation has to be submitted.  Appointments are on Tuesday and Thursdays and can be set up by calling Mae Edmond at 282-0439 ext. 114 or emailing her at stlukesccso@stlukesparish.org

Council of Catholic Women

St. Luke’s Council of Catholic Women unites Catholic women in purpose, direction, and action in religious, educational, social and economic fields.  We serve as a medium through which the Catholic women of St. Luke’s may speak and act on matters of common interest.  We are committed in our efforts to carry out our mission of our parish, deanery, diocesan and national councils by supporting various charities.  Our membership is open to all Catholic women who subscribe to the objectives of the CCW.  We meet on the last Sunday of each month from 9:30-10:30 in the Hope Room. For more information contact Wanda Allen at 282-9021 or wajon@netzero.net.

The Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is an organization wherein charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism stand on the foundation that supports millions of Catholic men and their families.  All Catholic men in good standing with the church are eligible.  Catholic boys under age 18 may apply to join the Squires-- a youth organization. Some of the many functions the Knights supports are the Men’s Prayer Breakfast and the annual Parish Christmas Dinner.  The Knights meet the first and third Tuesdays at 7:30 in the Parish Center. For more information contact John Allen, Grand Knight, at 282-9021.

The Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary organizes a variety of activities which provide fun and fellowship in the parish.  Some annual events include holiday dances, a Father/Daughter Dance, and a Mother/Daughter Tea. Funds raised from these events support charities and purchase needed kitchen supplies. Any woman 18 or older can join the Ladies Auxiliary. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month. For more information contact Vina Delcomyn at 710-4303 or delcomynv@yahoo.com.

Martha’s Kitchen Ministry

Martha’s Kitchen Ministry, in conjunction with the Office of Religious Education, seeks to serve the parishioners of St. Luke’s Catholic Church by preparing and serving meals and organizing receptions for various parish events.  In the spirit of Christian service, our team comes together to offer our time and gifts as a means to participate in the Church’s mission of evangelization and to give glory to God.  It is He who guides and enlivens all of our work.  In our ministry of service we have found authentic friendship and genuine concern for others. The name Martha’s Kitchen was chosen in honor of St. Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus and friend to Christ.  Like Martha, in our ministry of service, we hope to befriend Christ via our labor of love. For more information please contact Mary McMaster at 406-0546 or mcmasters3275@comcast.net.

Nursery

St.Luke's Nursery is available for children from infancy to age four.  Our goal is to provide these children with a nurturing environment so that they may experience God's love as they play and learn.  Our nursery provides families the opportunity to attend the 11 AM Sunday Mass while knowing their child is being cared for in a safe and loving environment.  St.Luke's Nursery staff consists of outstanding, capable members of our church who have completed a screening process which includes fingerprinting and a background check and the completion of "Protecting God's Children" workshop. For more information contact Sue Mann at 779-9826 or martinmann@bellsouth.net.

Parish Outreach

Parish Outreach is committed to providing a wide range of assistance to those in need in our parish community and our neighborhood.  Parish Outreach attends to the needs of the homeless, the bereaved, the handicapped, the sick and the dying, along with welcoming new members to the parish, hosting parish activities and receptions, and providing coffee and donuts after Sunday masses.  This is accomplished through various committees:

  • Senior Services identifies the needs of the Senior population of the parish and provides assistance on an individual or group basis and plans events including weekly  Cracker Barrel Days and monthly Game Days.
  • Operation Blessing provides food baskets and gifts for the holidays.
  • Special Needs tends to the needs of our parishioners including sitting with someone who is ill, providing rides to doctors’ appointments or church, and collecting and delivering clothing and needed supplies to Clay Hill Elementary School.
  • Bereavement provides comfort and support to the bereaved under the direction of Father Andy.  A reception (hosted by Outreach members) or a deli tray is offered to the family.
  • Direct Assistance makes lunches every Sunday morning for Labor Ready workers, organizes Food Distribution Days every other month, and makes and serves dinners at Sulzbacher Shelter and Mercy Network Outreach Program several times a year.
  • Rosary and Prayer Blanket Ministry volunteers cut material, sew pockets on the blankets and insert prayer cards and rosaries in the pocket. They are then blessed with the intention of covering the needy recipient with prayer.  The Rosary group makes cord rosaries to be given out to the missionaries overseas and in the U.S.  Materials are provided.  The Rosary group gathers every Thursday morning from 10:00 a.m. til noon.  For more information on the Rosary Group please contact Arlene Tomaro at 282-1287. The Blanket Ministry meets the second Thursday of each month September through May from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. For more information on the Blanket Ministry please contact Kathy Peacock at 269-0361 or bo.kat65@comcast.net.

Parish Outreach is open to all adult parishioners. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. For more information contact Carolyn Petrelli, President, at 291-7725 or cpet826@comcast.net.

Respect Life Committee

The Respect Life Committee promotes and encourages respect for life from conception to natural death through prayer, education, and participation in pro-life events in the diocese.  Some of the events that we have supported include:  Life Chain, Forty Days for Life, and March for Life in St. Augustine.  We meet the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m.  All parishioners are invited and welcome to join in our ministry of protecting all human life.  For more information contact the Respect Life Coordinator, Sherry Tracz @ 291-3619 or stracz@bellsouth.net.

Scouting

St. Luke's hosts both a Boy Scouts of America troop and pack.  We are a very active organization that engages boys in activities that teach duty to God, outdoor skills, and civic duty.  Responsibility, self-confidence, and leadership skills are taught in fun, organized meetings and outings.  The troop is open to all boys ages 11 to 18.  The pack is open to all boys grades 1 to 5.  Meetings are held on Monday evenings in the Parish Center.  Please contact Ron Burckhard at 904-813-6804 or scouting_st_lukes@yahoo.com, or Alison Duvall at 904-718-7563 for more information.

St.Luke's Link

St.Luke's Link is our parish newsletter. It is a communication tool that, along with the weekly bulletin and the monthly St. Augustine Catholic, keeps us in touch with each other.  The news in the Link is parish-centered, including ministry reports and requests.  When possible, we also like to capture photographs of all the good that happens at our parish.  While we often report on past events, the goal is to put out information about upcoming happenings to invite and involve more parishioners.  We publish a newsletter four times a year: Easter, Summer, Back-to-School, and Christmas. St. Luke's Link is intended to communicate the vitality of our parish life. We welcome submissions. Please submit photographs and articles to link@stlukesparish.org. For more information contact Melanie Love at 673-8596 or link@stlukesparish.org.
